The LEAF has been chosen by Ward’s Auto, a trusted source of information on the automotive industry, as one of its “10 Best Engines” for 2011.  For the first time in the 17-year history of the list, a powertrain has been chosen that doesn’t have an engine and will never burn a drop of gasoline.

To earn this distinction, the LEAF had to square off against 38 competing engines, the largest field in the history of the award.  From this group, which also included combustion engines, diesels, and hybrids, the LEAF earned a top spot based on factors such as horsepower and torque; noise, vibration and harshness; the engine’s technical attributes; and their relevance among direct rivals.

At the heart of the Nissan LEAF is a high-response 80kW AC synchronous motor, which is powered by a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery.  This system is able to produce 107 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, which is transferred to the wheels through a single-speed reduction gear.

The power system in the Nissan LEAF provides a highly responsive, fun-to-drive ride consistent with that of traditional, gasoline-powered vehicles.

The 2011 Nissan LEAF goes on sale this month in selected markets and will be available across the country in 2012.
