The “Top Safety Pick” is the highest safety designation awarded by the IIHS.  To qualify for the award, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of “good” in the IIHS’ front, side, rollover, and rear impact tests and must also be equipped with electronic stability control.

The IIHS testing was made more stringent in 2010 with the addition of the rollover test. To earn a “good” rollover rating, a roof must be able to support the equivalent of four times the vehicle’s weight compared with the current federal standard of 1.5.  In the IIHS testing, the Sienna roof withstood a force equal to 4.12 times its vehicle weight.  The Avalon’s weight withstood 4.07 times its vehicle weight.

The new Sienna is the first, and currently the only, minivan to earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick since the rollover test was added to the criteria.

From March through November, Porsche of Nashua hosts a rally for their customers that include a long drive through the back roads of Massachusetts and New Hampshire.  There is no cost to take part in the rally and the dealership welcomes all Porsche owners and their passengers.  No experience is required to participate in the monthly rallies.

Porsche owners meet at the dealership on a Thursday or Saturday (dates vary month to month) and are given specific rally instructions by Porsche of Nashua staff members.  Once introductions have been given, customers line up and set off on their journey.   Once all participants return from their drive, they are treated to a themed catered dinner and prizes courtesy of the New Hampshire Porsche dealership.

Past rally themes have included a “sports rally,” “sake and sushi rally” and most recently, a “scavenger hunt rally.”  Every season concludes with the annual Thanksgiving themed “turkey trot rally.”

The news continues to get worse for this troubled car maker. The question to be seen is if these mounting problems will hurt the brand long term.

According to a survey of car dealers, many dealers feel that Toyota will bounce back from their recall woes. Many said that they would not count Toyota out and that the brand loyalty among Toyota owners was very strong.

An excerpt from the Yahoo News story also added this interesting twist:

Despite pressure from some lawmakers, President Akio Toyoda said he won’t be attending the U.S. congressional hearing on the automaker’s quality lapses, entrusting the job to U.S.-based executives, though would consider an appearance if the committee requests it. He said he wanted to focus on improving quality worldwide.

“I trust that our officials in the U.S. will amply answer the questions,” Toyoda said Wednesday in his third news conference in two weeks. “We are sending the best people to the hearing, and I hope to back up the efforts from headquarters.”

He said Yoshi Inaba, who heads Toyota Motor Corp.’s North American unit, was more familiar with the U.S. situation and was the best executive to deal with the hearing. Toyoda said he was still making plans to go to the U.S. and dates have yet to be set.

In an effort to overhaul its entire global powertrain portfolio, Ford will unveil 60 new powertrains this year to improve fuel economy and reduce C02 emissions. The move, which will surely benefit Pittsfield Ford drivers, makes Ford the top automaker to reduce C02 emissions.

The fuel-saving techonology includes twin independent variable cam timing, direct injection, and six-speed and dual clutch tranmissions to Ford’s smallest and most affordable cars.

“Ford is delivering on our commitment to lower emisssions, improve fuel economy and deliver the highest quality powertrains in the industry,” said Barb Samardzich, Ford vice president of Powertrain Engineering.

Pittsfield Ford Dealership Prepares For Powertrain Upgrades

“By the end of 2010, nearly all of Ford’s North American engines will have been upgraded or replaced since 2008,” said Samardzich. “[This is] one of the most ambitious powertrain upgrades ever undertaken by Ford.”

The new Ford Fiesta Ti-VCT 1.6-liter engine and PowerShift dual clutch transmission will deliver up to 40 miles per gallon. The Ti-VCT 305-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 in the Ford Mustang continues to keep the Mustang as the head of its class with top performance and up to 30 miles to the gallon.

The Mustang GT will hit the roads of Pittsfield this year with a new 5.0-liter V-8 that produces 412 total horsepower and gives at least 25 miles per gallon.

Pittsfield drivers can also look for the all-new Ford-designed-and-built Super Duty diesel truck engine. The 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel will make its mark when it comes to fuel economy towing, hauling, horsepower, and torque.

Ford Claims 2010 As Their Year To Change The Driving Experience

In 2010, Ford will unveil an EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 for the F-150, which feels like a V-8 but delivers the same fuel economy as a V-6. By 2013, Ford plans to offer EcoBoost engines on 90 percent of its product lineup.

The all-new 2.0-liter Ti-VCT four-cylinder engine will launch at the end of 2010 with the 2012 Ford Focus.

Over the past year, Acton Toyota of Littleton has been a top referrer to the Boston Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange’s (MARE) Car Donation Program, one of MARE’s key fundraising initiatives to maintain its mission of recruiting adults to adopt local youth from foster care. To commend the dealership’s commitment to building families through adoption, MARE recently presented Acton Toyota of Littleton with a “Friend of the Family” award.

“Sometime a customer’s used car is worth more to them as a charitable tax donation than we can give them in trade-in value,” said Mike Hills, general manager of Acton Toyota of Littleton. “We’re glad to give our customers the option of turning their used cars into a good deed for needy children.”

Acton Toyota of Littleton has referred dozens of used car owners to MARE’s Car Donation Program.  The vehicles (car, trucks, motorcycles, and even boats) are processed in conjunction with Route 128 Used Auto Parts in Waltham, MARE’s automobile recycling partner. Each donated vehicle has value to MARE, having provided over $100,000 last year alone to support MARE’s programs, such as Adoption Parties and Wednesday’s Child stories on WBZ-TV.

A local TV investigative report described MARE’s Car Donation Program as “one of the better ways to maximize donation dollars.” MARE receives 50% of the proceeds when a donated vehicle is sold, while many other vehicle donation programs contribute only 7% – 10% to their designated charity.

MARE is currently seeking adoptive families for 517 children and teens in Boston Massachusetts foster care. Over the past 52 years, MARE has helped more than 5,350 youth leave temporary state care for permanent family life.

“Each year more than 600 local teens ‘age out’ of the foster care system at age 18 to fend for themselves in our communities,” said Lisa Funaro, MARE’s executive director.  “With the generous support of Acton Toyota of Littleton and their customers, we can continue to focus on finding adoptive families for children in state care who have been waiting the longest for a home.”
